Green Changes I'm Not Ready to Make

As a Catholic, I believe it is my duty to take care of what God has given us. This is the driving force behind my push for green living. But there are still a few changes I'm not ready to make:

  1. Using Diva Cups or cloth pads instead of tampons or disposable pads. One day, I'll make the switch. But to be honest, living with other people makes me a little embarrassed to wash out reusable mensural products, even though it shouldn't. For those braver than me, here's a fantastic article about the subject.
  2. Use less gas. I don't walk or bike as often as I could - and should - when I do have the opportunity.
  3. Avoiding plastic packaging. I'm more conscious of what I buy and make an effort to buy used, but I have yet to make my foray into buying in bulk.
Though I have a long way to go, I have made a few changes recently that I am proud of!
  1. Signing up for recycling. I know, I know. This is such a basic change, but no one in my neighborhood has signed back up for recycling after Katrina for whatever reason. I was amazing at how much trash we have been needlessly sending to the landfill each week!
  2. Composting. We actually used to compost, but it never really worked and no one wanted to keep it up. Now, we do "trench composting". Here's an article for those interested, but it's literally just digging a small trench in your garden and filling it with your normal compostable materials. I also like to make 'compost smoothies' for my roses (coffee grounds, egg shells, and banana peels) and mix it into the topsoil ever now and then.
  3. DIY laundry detergent. I'm really proud of this one, because it works great and I've gotten a number of friends and family hooked on it as well!
